The Herb Garden Restaurant - Our Style

Welcome to The Herb Garden Restaurant.

Owning a Restaurant such as “The Herb Garden” has been a life long dream for both Coralie and myself, Darren (usually tucked away in the Kitchen, never seeing the light of day....) and we are very pleased to have achieved that dream in such a place as Cromer. We both share the same opinions in how the industry has changed over the years and would like to spend a couple of minutes to share this with you……

The media is currently focused on the wide range of great ingredients and varied cooking techniques available, from the large number of cookery programmes on the T.V to the advent of the “Celebrity Chef”, the general public are, quite rightly, becoming well educated in food. Thirty years ago, a plain steak was regarded as a good meal out. Nowadays, with meats such as venison, duck, prime cuts of “exotic” beef and infinite variety of fish widely available to use at home, the expectations of the restaurateur have increased. It’s up to us, as restaurateurs, to go beyond dishes you would normally create at home. This is where The Herb Garden fits in. Any meal out should, in our opinion, be a memorable experience and we hope to broaden that experience, not only with exceptional food made from the finest local ingredients (Norfolk has one of the best ranges of fresh local ingredients that I have ever known) but also a bright friendly atmosphere in the restaurant.

This attention to detail is why we only serve beef and lamb that has been locally raised and aged for at least 21 days. Our fish is delivered fresh every day and although our vegetable selection may not be particularly exotic, it is so local we can name each grower and we believe that’s far more important than tasteless exotics.  If you require more vegetables on your table, please ask. You may also notice the lack of ‘chips’ on the menu, this is because each dish has it’s own potato accompaniment that best compliments the meat, if you really want grease laden sticks of potato with your meal, then The Herb Garden is not for you, however if you would like sauté potatoes cooked with onion, bacon and thyme please ask.

Every part of your meal will be made in our kitchen (and not “home cooked” pre-manufactured garbage that anyone could purchase, so why go to a restaurant and pay over the odds for something you could heat, not even cook….sorry, couldn’t help myself). If you have any dietary requirements, we will do our very best to accommodate you. We can also ‘mix and match’ certain aspects of the menu, so if a dish catches your eye, but you’re not sure about one ingredient, we will try to accommodate you.

Our wine list has every grape and every country within it, with every pocket in mind. We’ve had a great deal of praise for our house wines, which are very reasonably priced. At the other end of the spectrum is our ‘fine and rare’ range for the connoisseurs amongst you.

From the framed prints on the wall, the solid oak tables, the wines that have been especially food matched for our menu and the exceptional cutlery on the tables….. everything should be a talking point throughout your evening. Food is our passion and we hope it shows, so whether you’re visiting for a quick bite at lunch time or a full evening meal, we hope you’ll leave with a contented feeling that you’ll want to repeat time and time again.

We are exceptionally proud of our award winning Studio William cutlery; if you wish to purchase a set for your own use we would be happy to order it for you. Please see the separate article for more details.

We ask that parents don’t allow their children to run around, for safety reasons, or make excessive noise, out of respect for your fellow customers. We also love dogs and have two of our own, but feel they are not conducive to a hygienic restaurant, so ask that you do not to bring them in.

We accept all major credit cards, including American Express.
